World Bicycle Day 2022: Why the world needs more cyclists than ever

Today is World Bicycle Day, the day to celebrate bicycles as a reliable, sustainable, and healthy way to move around. No matter if you are riding a bike or an e-bike, this day is dedicated to you. In today's blog, we will talk about why the world needs cyclists like you more than ever in 2022.

To save the environment

In 2022, we are racing against time to reach global carbon neutrality before 2050, and the cyclists are crucial for achieving this goal. Bikes and e-bikes are so energy efficient that they can usually replace cars and buses for short-distance travel. Unlike cars or buses, they do not emit any greenhouse gases or toxic fumes. If a daily commuter can replace at least 50% of car trips with bike rides, the positive impact on the surrounding environment would be equivalent to planting 71 trees in a year in your neighborhood.

Many European countries are doing an outstanding job of promoting the use of bikes and e-bikes. Over 75% of German families own at least one bicycle, and the Netherlands has the highest number of bicycles per capita. Cyclists also abound in Italy, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. If more countries can start to adopt similar cyclist-friendly policies, carbon neutrality before 2050 would become much more achievable.

To improve public health

Besides saving the planet, we need more cyclists to improve public health. Cycling is not only a fast, flexible, and reliable way to move, but it is also a great form of exercise. Cycling regularly can help to improve our health and boost our immune system. The best part? No gym membership is required since you can get all the needed exercise when commuting or running errands. More cycling commuters usually means a healthier population and less reliance on the scarce resources of the public health systems.

Improved physical health also leads to better mental health. Just like JFK said, "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of a bike ride." No matter what day of the year it is, cycling can always help to spread more smiles around the world.

To reduce poverty

In addition, we need more cyclists in developing countries to reduce poverty there. There are a billion people around the world who are challenged to find reliable transportation, and the gift of a bicycle can completely change their lives. According to a research by World Bicycle Relief, bicycles can change the lives of people in need in the following ways:

-Reduce the commute time of students by 75%

-Thus increasing attendance rate by 27%, and academic performance by 59%

-Help farmers and entrepreneurs travel four times further, and carry five times the amount of goods

-Help healthcare workers visit more than twice the amount of patients a day

Being aware of this, TENWAYS is also working hand in hand with Wheels4Life, an inspiring charity organization to provide free bicycles for people in need. You can read this blog to explore the details of our joint commitment.
