Introduction
World Bicycle Day began in 2018, established by the UN to celebrate cycling and promote environmental sustainability, health, and social equity.
The theme of World Bicycle Day 2026 is "Advancing Sustainable Mobility and Inclusive Transport", emphasising the way that bicycles can provide an affordable, accessible form of green transportation to build healthier societies.
Given that e-bikes are projected to outsell cars in Europe by the mid-decade, and they can potentially save up to 577 euros of carbon emissions per year, there's never been a better time to opt for an e-bike.

For World Bicycle Day 2026 in particular, the sustainability of e-bike usage is key. Whilst cars emit 271g of CO2 and buses emit 101g per person-kilometre over their full lifecycle in Europe, e-bikes only emit around 22g.
E-bikes are also shown to improve cardiometabolic risk factors in as little as 4 weeks and can increase individual physical fitness by up to 10% in both inactive adults and those with chronic disease (making it an accessible health-booster).
After the initial cost, e-bike maintenance generally costs between €100-€250 annually, compared to the significantly higher costs for petrol, parking, and routine maintenance of a car or the annual pass cost for public transport.
