Your Clothing Guide to Riding Your E-Bike Comfortably in Changing Weather

Introduction

Autumn and early winter weather can bring a welcome reprieve from humid summer weather, but the beautiful scenery can also cause concerns about cold and darker mornings, brisk winds, and rain.

The good news is that you don't need special add-ons or a massive budget to keep warm and cosy during colder months. With a few smart clothing choices, you'll be ready to ride no matter what the weather throws at you.

Let's take a look at how you can ride comfortably in changing weather.

Know the weather (and plan accordingly)

Whilst this might be easier said than done due to the fast-changing nature of the colder months, checking the forecast regularly and dressing accordingly can help you avoid being caught out.

Additionally, autumn often brings sudden and unexpected cooler air, wind, and rain. It's better to be proactive than rely entirely on the forecast (e.g., pack a light raincoat and gloves even if the weather seems milder that morning).

Keep in mind that morning and evening rides will also be colder than midday ones!

Dress in easy, manageable layers

There's no need for expensive, technical clothing when you can already use what you have:

  • Inner layer: Opt for a breathable t-shirt or long-sleeved shirt that absorbs sweat.
  • Mid-layer: Hoodies, light jumpers, and fleeces can keep you warm and cosy.
  • Outer layer: You want a jacket that blocks wind and light rain.

The main aim is to wear layers that can be easily added and removed. Even if you don't have heavy-duty weatherproof outer layers, you can remove a standard jacket to dry and still be warm underneath with proper layering.

Smart add-ons (no need to buy new)

There are helpful, but optional additions that can be used to make your rides smoother during cooler weather that you already have access to.

Scarves and neckwarmers, full-finger gloves, and caps are great accessories to have for additional warmth that are light and easy to pack.

TENWAYS tip: If you're an early-morning or late-night rider, basic front and rear lights are simple but highly useful for visibility and safety.

Dress for the conditions

You can make small but impactful adjustments to your outfit depending on the specific conditions. For example, in cold and dry weather, an extra layer, gloves, a scarf, and something to cover your poor, cold ears is ideal.

For rainy or windy conditions, the priority is a rain jacket or waterproof layers, an extra pair of dry socks, and a seat cover. Quick-drying pants are also a must to avoid a sodden walk to your destination!

Milder, sunny days mean light layers and sunglasses are best, though we'd still always recommend packing a jacket just in case.

TENWAYS tip: If you're facing heavy rain, consider parking your e-bike indoors or at a covered bike shelter. It's perfectly fine to skip or delay until conditions improve rather than forcing it!

Quick comfort tips

Beyond staying flexible and adaptable with your layers and accessories based on the weather conditions, it's also important not to overdress to avoid swift overheating.

The benefit of light, manageable layers is that if you use a backpack or pannier bag on your rear carrier, you can store your extra layers for when they're needed.

Don't forget to keep your seat dry, too. If you haven't got a seat cover, a plastic bag works in a pinch!

Enjoy your ride no matter the weather

Riding in autumn and early winter can be smooth and cosy with the clothes and accessories you already have.

Keep your layers light and flexible, stay visible, and you'll be ready to tackle whatever the weather throws at you.
